How to Change Battery on Quest 2 Controller: Easy Step-by-Step Guide

Replacing the battery in your Meta Quest 2 controller is a straightforward process that can breathe new life into your VR sessions. Over time, the original cell inside the Twin Controller loses its capacity, leading to shorter playtimes and the frustration of a dying grip mid-adventure. This guide walks you through the exact steps to swap the old battery for a fresh one, ensuring you spend less time tethered to a charger and more time immersed in your favorite games.

Gathering Your Tools and Materials

Before you begin the disassembly, it is essential to have the right supplies on hand. You do not need an extensive toolkit, but having the correct items ensures a smooth and safe experience. Using the wrong tools, such as a metal screwdriver, can damage the plastic housing or puncture the battery, so stick to the recommended options.

A small Phillips PH000 screwdriver

A plastic prying tool or guitar pick

A clean, static-free workspace

Powering Down and Preparing the Controller

Safety and preparation are the first steps in any electronics repair. You need to ensure the controller is completely powered off to prevent accidental input during the process. While the Quest 2 controllers are designed with replaceable batteries in mind, they are still sensitive devices that require careful handling.

To power down, simply hold the Trigger and Grip buttons simultaneously for a few seconds until the LED indicators turn off. Once the controller is off, place it on your workspace with the battery compartment facing up. This orientation allows gravity to assist you later when you remove the battery cover, preventing small parts from falling into unseen crevices.

Removing the Battery Cover

The back plate of the controller is secured by a single Philips screw located near the wrist strap slot. Using your PH000 screwdriver, carefully remove this screw and store it in a safe place. Losing this tiny screw is a common mishap, so consider placing it on a magnetic tray or the tip of your screwdriver.

With the screw removed, gently lift the plastic battery cover. It may be snug due to heat expansion or minor warping over time. If it resists, use your plastic prying tool to slowly separate the cover from the body. Avoid using metal tools here, as they can scratch the plastic or slip and puncture the battery inside the controller’s core.

Extracting the Old Battery

Once the cover is off, you will see the cylindrical battery held in place by adhesive tape. The battery is usually secured with a strong double-sided sticker, so simply lifting it with your fingers is unlikely to work. You must break the adhesive bond carefully to avoid tearing the battery casing.

Use your plastic prying tool to gently slide under one edge of the battery. Slowly lift it while applying slight pressure until the adhesive releases. If the tape is particularly strong, you may use a hairdryer set to low heat to warm the adhesive, making removal easier. Remember to handle the battery by the edges and never puncture or bend it.

Installing the New Battery

With the old battery removed, you are ready to introduce the new cell to its home. Before placing the new battery into the compartment, inspect the adhesive side of the replacement. Most aftermarket batteries come with a new adhesive pad, but if yours does not, you can apply a fresh piece of double-sided tape designed for electronics.

Position the new battery with the positive terminal (usually marked with a + symbol) facing the same direction as the old one. Firmly press the battery into the center of the compartment to ensure the adhesive bonds securely. A properly seated battery should sit flush against the bottom and sides of the compartment, with no shifting when you move the controller.
